Young theatre lovers were treated to a magical performance at Plume Academy, as the school welcomed hundreds of pupils for a special staging of Frozen JR.
Across two performances on Monday and Tuesday, nearly 250 Year 5 students from seven local primary schools took their seats to enjoy the much-loved Disney tale, brought to life by a talented cast of 80 Plume Academy students.
The production drew glowing reactions from its young audience, many of whom were experiencing live theatre on this scale for the very first time.
Schools attending the performances included Heybridge Primary School, St Francis Primary School, Wentworth Primary School, Maldon Primary School, Tollesbury Primary School, All Saints Primary School and Maldon Court Preparatory School.
To mark the occasion, each school was presented with a personalised framed poster of the production.
Mr Baster, joint head of academy, said the performances reflect the academy’s renewed commitment to the arts following the disruption caused by the pandemic.
He said: “Following the Covid-related school closures of 2020 and 2021, our wonderful Expressive Arts faculty were minded to re-introduce school productions.
“Five years on, they have become a staple of our academy calendar.
“Staff and students alike invest significant time into these productions; the performances often give the audience goosebumps – we are expecting more this year, given this year’s production is Frozen.
“This year, we were especially pleased to be able to invite Year 5 students, many of whom may well be starring in these productions should they arrive to study at Plume in 2027.”
Members of the academy’s Expressive Arts Faculty said the event was as rewarding for performers as it was for their audience.
A representative said: “We were delighted to welcome so many local primary school pupils to Plume Academy for this year’s production of Frozen JR.
“It was a truly memorable experience for both our visitors and the Plume community.
“Pupils shared in the magic of live theatre and enjoyed seeing former classmates and peers perform in a production of such a high standard and scale.
“It was a privilege to provide this opportunity, enabling young people to experience first-hand the creativity, confidence and aspiration that the performing arts can inspire.
"We hope the performance not only entertained but also encouraged our young visitors to explore their own talents and ambitions in the future.”
Plume Academy says it is proud to open its doors to younger students and hopes to welcome even more schools from across the area to future summer productions.
