A 92-year-old care home resident has been taken back to a place filled with treasured memories after a special trip was arranged to one of Essex’s most loved gardens.
Rita Thomas, who lives at Care UK’s Manor Lodge in Chelmsford, was delighted when staff organised a visit to RHS Garden Hyde Hall – a location she once visited regularly and where many of her happiest memories were made.
For Rita, a lifelong gardener and keen birdwatcher, the 365-acre site is far more than just a garden.
It is a place tied closely to family days out with her granddaughter Charlotte, as well as precious time spent alongside her late husband, David.

One of the standout highlights of the day was the stunning display of waterlilies, which Rita said were “the stars of the show”, as she paused to take in the reflections and colours across the ponds.
She spent time exploring different themed gardens, learning about plants and simply soaking in the atmosphere of a place she has always held close to her heart.
Rita said: “Visiting Hyde Hall brought back so many happy memories as I used to come here with Charlotte.
“It was so special to return and enjoy the beautiful flowers and listen to the birds singing. I cannot wait to visit again.”
The visit was arranged by staff at Manor Lodge, who say supporting residents to reconnect with meaningful places and past experiences is a key part of life at the home.
