A body has been exhumed from a burial ground as part of an onging investigation after Essex Police received information about the death of the woman
Specialist teams were seen at Fenns Meadow Green Burial Ground near Whitchurch in north Shropshire this morning (September 7) as officers investigate the death of a woman.
West Mercia Police have confirmed that the exhumation has taken place to help them with their investigation into the death of a 57-year-old from Telford in 2022.
Officers have confirmed that the investigation was launched after they were contacted by Essex Police after they received information about the death of the woman earlier this year.
In a statement released by West Mercia Police, Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse, from the Major Investigations Unit confirmed that a 62-year-old man was later arrested as a part of their investigations.
“On Wednesday 6 May 2026 we were contacted by Essex Police after information was given to them regarding the death of a 57-year-old woman in Telford in 2022,” said DCI Holehouse.
“An investigation was then launched by West Mercia Police, and a 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.
“He has since been released on police bail as enquiries continue.
“As part of the ongoing investigation, which is now being treated as an unexplained death, this morning (Monday 7 September) officers have completed the exhumation of a grave at Fenns Meadow Green Burial Ground near Whitchurch, Shropshire.”
DCI Holehouse paid tribute to the staff at Fenns Meadow Green for their help assisting officers ahead of the operation.
“The activity at the cemetery is unrelated to the burial ground, but we would like to thank Fenns Meadow Green for their cooperation and assistance while we carried out this complex operation,” said DCI Holehouse.
"Due to the ongoing investigation we are unable to release further details at this time, but will do so when we are able to.”
