WALKERS are being invited to explore the scenic coastline and countryside of the Maldon district.
The Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival will take place from September 25 to October 4, offering 10 days of free guided walks and activities across the district.
Over 42 routes, the programme includes wildlife walks, heritage trails and countryside hikes for all ages and abilities.
Festival co-ordinator Chris Harvey says the event will help people discover places and stories "that have been on their doorstep all along".
He told the Standard: "The Saltmarsh Coast has an extraordinary mixture of open estuary, saltmarsh, wildlife, maritime heritage, historic villages and big skies."
Mr Harvey says he is specially excited by the "sheer range" of free walks on offer this year.
He said: "People can try Nordic Walking beside the Blackwater, explore Tollesbury's maritime story with a local boatbuilder and Thames sailing barge skipper, discover First World War history at Stow Maries, or follow the legends of the Dengie to St Peter-on-the-Wall.
"Above all, we want people to enjoy being outdoors and to come away a little more connected to the Saltmarsh Coast and to one another."
The festival showcases 75 miles of coastline, countryside, and villages, with each walk led by a knowledgeable local guide.
Routes highlight estuary views, saltmarsh habitats, historic landmarks, and rural footpaths.
There are also self-guided routes for those who prefer to explore at their own pace.
James Burrell-Cook, chairman of the Saltmarsh Coast Tourism Group, said: "The festival not only helps with fitness and allows you to explore our amazing district on foot, it also supports local business, venues and attractions."
Walks will take in destinations such as Heybridge Basin, Burnham, Beeleigh Falls, and Bradwell, blending natural beauty with cultural and historical interest.
Families can also take part in a treasure trail through Maldon inspired by Byrhtnoth and the Battle of Maldon.
Following the news that the TG Jones store in Maldon will close next month, the Saltmarsh Coast Tourism Group is forming a High Street Focus group.
Mr Burrell-Cook said: "It will specifically look at challenges to our wonderful High Street."
