Heavy rain and possible gales are forecast to hit Essex over the bank holiday weekend.

Wet and windy weather will sweep in for the final days of meteorological summer, bringing rain to much of the county.

According to the Met Office, Saturday is expected to be the wettest day, with a 70% or greater chance of rain from 10am until 9pm.

Between 11am and noon, the chance of downpours is above 95%, and heavy rain is expected between noon and 1pm.

Wind gusts could reach 27mph.

On Sunday, conditions are expected to brighten slightly.

However, light rain remains possible between noon and 11pm, with the chance varying from 30% to 60%.

Gusts could again reach 27mph.

Monday looks similar, with some sunshine and a 30% chance of rain between noon and 4pm.

Gusts, however, are expected to climb to 31mph.

The Met Office outlook for Saturday reads: "Dry to start with some early sunny spells for eastern parts.

"Rain, heavy and perhaps thundery at times, becoming widespread from late morning, persisting for the rest of the day. Maximum temperature 22 °C."

Its outlook for Sunday and Monday says: "Unsettled weather looks set to continue into the start of next week with outbreaks of rain or showers, occasionally heavy with the risk of thunder. Temperatures around normal."

Rain will be welcomed after an exceptionally dry and hot summer, during which five heatwaves hit Essex.

Most of England and all of Wales remain in drought, with conditions expected to worsen until sustained rainfall arrives across the country.
