Popular bar and restaurant chains in Essex could be saved under a new hospitality group.

It was recently announced, a number of Beefeater and Brewers Fayre sites were due to close across the county sold by Whitbread.

All venues are set to close in the coming weeks as part of a restructuring plan, as well as other notable names such as Table Table.

However, out of 261 sites earmarked for closure, 53 have been sold to Queensway Inns, who plan to relaunch them as a new chain which could include some Essex sites.

A Whitbread spokesperson told Newsquest: "Whitbread has reached an agreement for the conditional sale of 53 branded restaurant sites to Queensway Inns, subject to a number of final conditions being met.

"Queensway Inns has extensive experience operating hospitality businesses across the UK and intends to operate the sites as going concerns.

"Subject to completion of the sale and following the relevant TUPE information and consultation processes, around 900 team members could transfer and will be supported through the process."

The 53 sites which could be saved are yet to be confirmed and the future of the other 208 remain uncertain.

The popular restaurants in the county will shut as part of a wider UK restructure.

A letter to reward club members, seen by Newsquest, has confirmed all UK Beefeaters will close on September 10, as part of a restructuring expected to cut around 3,800 jobs nationwide.

South Essex closures include The Haywain in Fobbing, The Watermill in Basildon, Harlow Mill in Old Harlow, Liberty Bell in Romford, and Strawberry Field in Southend.

In north Essex Table Table’s Balkerne Gate in Colchester and Bowling Green in Clacton will both be closing, as well as the Mulberry Tree in Braintree and The Mayflower in Dovercourt.
