LONDON Stansted Airport is set to begin construction on new passenger walkways as part of a major transformation programme.
The airport has appointed Farrans as its delivery partner for the new Skylink walkways, which will connect the main terminal directly to satellite buildings housing departure and arrival gates.
The project is part of a wider plan to improve passenger experience and increase airport capacity.
Rob Stewart, Stansted’s capital delivery programme director, said: "We’re delighted to continue our strong and successful partnership with Farrans at London Stansted having successfully worked with the team through the design, planning and enabling phases of the Skylinks project, a vital component in our overall transformation programme."
Passengers will be able to access gates directly via the Skylink walkways, replacing the existing track transit people mover system.
This change will free up space for future terminal expansion toward the airfield.
At the centre of the transformation programme is a three-bay terminal extension, which will add 16,500 square metres of space and new shops, bars and restaurants.
Once complete, Stansted will become the largest single-terminal airport in Europe.
The Skylinks will feature passenger travelators and will accommodate assistance buggies for passengers with reduced mobility.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this summer, with pre-assembly taking place offsite in a vacant airport hangar on the north side of the airfield.
The offsite approach is expected to improve safety, reduce congestion in operational areas and shorten delivery times.
Completed sections will be transported overnight on self-propelled modular transporters to minimise disruption.
