Search the Public Notice PortalA CARAVAN site has lost an appeal to overturn Colchester Council’s decision to ban it from new signs.
Fen Farm Caravan Site, in Moore Lane, East Mersea, had submitted a planning application for advertising consent to the authority in January.
The business wanted to set up a 2.65m by 2.24m non-illuminated Fen Farm Caravan site sign made from oak timber beams and Corten steel.
It would have been placed inside the entrance to the site from East Road onto Moore Lane and would be eight metres back from the edge of the highway.
Following the council’s rejection in April and a subsequent appeal launched to the Planning Inspectorate in June, it has now been rejected.
Inspector Terrence Kemmann-Lane said: “It would be substantially higher than the existing hedges at the entrance to the caravan site.
“As a feature of such substantial proportions, the proposed sign would be prominent and unlike any other signage in the vicinity in this remote area.
“In any event, the presence of this signage does not justify the appeal proposal which would have an adverse effect on the quality and character of the countryside, the coastal protection belt and public visual amenity due to the poorly sited and designed advertisement sign.”
The council had rejected it due to the plans not matching with National Planning Policy Framework and Local Plan guidelines – ultimately affecting the rural area.

The appeal submitted to the Planning Inspectorate had argued the sign is appropriate for the area.
It then said the character and appearance of the sign would “not be out of keeping” as it is a similar size to competitor Mersea Island Holiday Park’s signs at the junction of Fen Lane and East Road.
However, Inspector Kemmann-Lane said: “There is some signage located at the junction of Fen Lane and East Road serving the neighbouring Mersea Island Holiday Park, approximately 150 metres to the east of the appeal site, but this appears to be of long standing and, although of a similar overall hight, does not have such robust elements.”
Fen Farm Caravan Site has 90 static caravans on the park for hire, and room for tents or motorhomes.
