A NEW exhibition in Maldon will show rare photographs of global star George Michael, with a book signing with the renowned celebrity photographer.
The Gallery on Maldon High Street is hosting Celebrating George, a two-week exhibition of images of the Careless Whisper singer by prominent British photographer Brian Aris, whose archive spans decades of work with music icons and the royal family.
The show will feature photographs of George Michael throughout the decades, from his breakout Wham! years in the 1980s through to his later career as a global solo artist.
George Michael shot to fame with Wham! before becoming one of the biggest solo stars of the 1980s and 1990s.
He sold tens of millions of records worldwide and became known for his powerful voice, songwriting and boundary‑pushing videos before his death on Christmas Day 2016, aged 53.
Brian Aris first photographed George Michael during the Wham! era and went on to document him over three decades, building a body of work that captures both the showman and the more private figure behind the spotlight.
Aris himself is one of Britain’s foremost music and portrait photographers, having moved from frontline photojournalism to shoot stars including David Bowie, Elton John and Duran Duran, as well as high‑profile royal occasions and celebrity weddings.
The Maldon exhibition will include a special book‑signing event with Aris on Saturday, July 4, from 5pm to 8pm, complete with complimentary drinks, canapés and a DJ to set the mood.
Visitors will be able to buy and have signed copies of his book, Celebrating George, which brings together many of the images on display.

Gallery owner Jo Milne said: “The exhibition came about as we had a David Bowie photographic show and book signing by Geoff MacCormack last November.
“It was so popular that I wanted to find another photographer who was also releasing a book, and it so happened that Brian Aris who is a renowned photographer who has worked with numerous pop icons and the royal family was releasing a book this year and exhibits his photographs.
“I’m really excited to have the show running for the two weeks and the opening night has had a huge amount of interest with many tickets already reserved through Eventbrite.”
The Gallery, which opened in September 2024 after extensive and sensitive renovation, has already built a colourful reputation for contemporary shows which are major fixtures in Maldon’s cultural calendar.
